Filling the corners

Now we’re working on the corners of My Patchwork Garden (2026 Stitch Along). These will take several steps, so today we’ll begin with the first step.

I decided that although it would be fun to fill every corner with something different, the design would look more cohesive if I limited myself to two. I put the stitches in opposing corners, here upper left and lower right, but you can arrange them anyway you want. You could fill all the corners with the same stitches if you thought it would please your eye more.

This is a tied windmill stitch. Usually with crossed and tied stitches you want the final stitches to be the same for all of them. The good news is that the first layer can be a little more haphazard if you want. It’s only important that the final layer be the same for the last stitch, the tying stitch.

The tied windmills cover 6 canvas threads each. I prefer to stitch the long vertical stitch first, then move out from there. But if you find a different method that works for you, go for it!

The tying stitches are cross stitches. I worked these in horizontal rows, completing each cross stitch before moving to the next one. And I thought a little sparkle would look good here, so I used the fine metallic braid.

You can find all of the instructions so far here: Stitch Along Part 14

I’m adding the new instructions to the existing instructions so they are all in one place. If you haven’t started your project yet, you can gather threads and start stitching!
