As I was waiting for my train from Chicago’s Union Station, I leaned back and saw the ceiling – a soft cream color, with circles and spokes and recessed areas. This ceiling inspired Gilded Cabochons. Instead of recessed areas I brought areas out, so this is somewhat dimensional, with textured areas surrounded by smooth satin stitch patterns. The cabochons are padded or stuffed small areas, standing up from the rest of the project.
What will you learn?
- Learn how to start and stop threads using pin stitches and loop starts, useful for every stitching project
- Emphasis is on developing a natural stitching rhythm, so you can stitch with more ease and enjoyment
- More than 40 counted canvas stitches
- Learn to pad stitches for more impact
- Explore texture rather than color to execute the design
This project is an excellent stitch sampler! Several sizes of Jessicas, padded and stuffed stitches, several satin stitch patterns, textured stitches – more than 40 stitches!
Gilded Cabochons is about 8″ x 8″ on 18 ct. canvas; canvas color depends on the color way selected – eggshell for the ecru/gold, French blue for the blue topaz, or pewter for the pewter.
Gilded Cabochons is written for four different color ways but you are always welcome to create your own. We are offering kits in three color ways (a fourth color way, Ruby/Gold, is included in the instructions): Pewter, Ecru/Gold, or Blue Topaz. The monochromatic color ways lend a touch of elegance, no matter which color you choose! The Pewter model was stitched by Linda R, the Blue Topaz model by Carol Y – thanks to these former students for sharing their finishes!
Stitch with several thread textures: pearl cotton and floss, metallic braids and ribbons, velvet, rayon ribbons, rayon pearl. In addition to the different thread textures, experience using felt and fiberfill to pad some of the stitches.
