I began this series with my favorite gemstone, Sapphire. This deep blue stone is the birthstone for September (and mine, I might add). Layered stitches deepen the texture of the stitches and color, with shiny threads reflecting the light to deepen the illusion of a gemstone.

The photo doesn’t do the subtleties of this exquisite pattern justice. The pattern is very clear and the fibers are gorgeous. I worked it as my on-the-go project, toting it to the dreaded Friday 8 am faculty meetings and it worked up quickly and dazzled all my colleagues. It makes a great treasure box lid!
