Friday nights at the football field, cheering for the home team! My high school years, oh so long ago, were punctuated by a standing date every Friday night in the stands, working my pompoms on the squad and supporting the Lamar Mustangs!

September always reminds me of those times, so this month’s Kit of the Month design is an homage to Friday nights, football and the pep squad. The project features a large football, framed by colorful pompoms and surrounded by a border of eyelet stitches.

There are few, if any, thread textures that mimic the texture of a football, so I selected Rainbow Gallery Petite Very Velvet and a highly textured stitch, woven plait. The white markings are also Petite Very Velvet in an encroaching gobelin stitch, with straight stitches for the football seam.

The eyelets are stitched in Presencia cotton floss, alternating in colors of red, white and blue. The pompoms are also created from the cotton floss; after fluffing, stitch them where you like. If your team colors aren’t red, white and blue, the cotton floss is easily and inexpensively replaced to reflect your team’s colors, and you can add the kit flosses to your stash to be used another time.

The kit includes a line drawn canvas, 8″ x 8″ sandstone 18 ct. mono deluxe; Rainbow Gallery Petite Very Velvet V648 Very Dark Fawn and V602 White; Presencia flosses 0001 White, 1902 Red, and 3405 Royal Blue, and size 22 tapestry needle. You will also need 2 pairs of 8″ stretcher bars, tacks or staples to attach the canvas to the bar, and usual stitching supplies like a laying tool and scissors.
