A new stitch along – Regal Autumn

Are you ready for a new project? I’m really pleased about this one, and I’m calling it Regal Autumn.

Regal Autumn threads

This one is going to be a mystery stitch along, so all I’m going to show right now are my threads. I’ve put a list together to make it easier to see all the color names and numbers:

First I selected an overdyed thread. I love Caron Collection Watercolours, so I looked at those threads first and found something that I think will be perfect, Glowing Embers. This overdyed has several darkish colors – blue, green, purple – and some flashes of brighter colors – tawny gold and red-orange. I love these colors. I’m not a great fan of autumn colors in general, but these are really nice and evoke the feeling of dark fall nights with touches of turning leaves and a warm fire.

Next I selected threads to go with it. All of these threads are from my stash. When I’m pulling threads for a new project, I pull way more than I think I’ll need, just to have lots of options when I sit down to stitch.

I’m starting with 4 colors of Presencia #8 pearl – navy, forest green, tawny gold and red-orange. Then I selected Presencia flosses in 2 shades of each color. I consider the pearl cottons and cotton flosses to be the “work horse” threads – I can do a lot with them, and usually my go-to threads for any project (not always, but usually).

Then I added in some texture – 4 colors of Kreinik #8 braids, Rainbow Gallery Neon Rays and Panache, some more glitter with Silk Lame’ Braid and Glisten. I didn’t have the colors in Silk Lame’ Braid and Glisten to have one in each color family, so I don’t know if I’ll be using these much, but it’s nice to have in the bag in case I need them. Then I added in some Edmar rayon pearls in a couple of different weights. I may or may not use these, but I like them and have used them before.

I thought these colors would like on Sandstone 18 ct. canvas, so I cut a piece 12″ x 12″ to mount on my stretcher bars. The project size is 6″ x 6″, and this allows me 3″ on each side of the design.

So that’s the start, and I’ll start the stitching next Monday with diagrams. I hope you’ll join me! If you decide to order all the same threads I’m using, please be aware that I’ve pulled more threads than I will use in the design. At this point I don’t know for sure which threads I’ll use, how much of each, or if I’ll have to hunt up additional threads. This is my starting point.

Hope you’ll join in the fun!

  1. Debbie,
I am sorry to hear about the passing of your father, I wish you all the best.
I am interested in the Regal Autumn Design when you start teaching this. I do not see a way to sign up for this group – can you direct me.

    Thank you,
    Molly

    1. Thanks so much Molly, I appreciate it. Regal Autumn is a free stitch along, so you don’t need to sign up for anything. I plan to post instructions on Mondays, and all you have to do is read the blog and stitch along too. Hope this helps, Debbie

  2. Where do you get your threads from for the regal autumn designI live in England and I am having difficulty in sourcing the rainbow gallery threads
    Thank you Jillian

    1. Hi Jillian, I know that sourcing Rainbow Gallery threads in the UK can be difficult. I can recommend some shops here in the US that will mail order for you, but I wanted to assure you that you can do Regal Autumn with threads you have on hand. It will look a little different, but it should still be pretty. For instance, for the Rainbow Gallery Panache, use #8 pearl cotton; it’s about the same width and will have the same look when stitched, it just won’t be shiny like the Panache which is a rayon pearl. Thanks, Debbie
